Asbestos is a building material that was previously used in the construction of homes. Because contact with asbestos can be dangerous to human health, its use has been banned in construction since the 1990s.

Normally, you will not notice that there is asbestos in your home and it is not dangerous. However, if you carry out renovation work in a home that was built before 1994, you may come into contact with asbestos.

Where might I find asbestos in my home?

Asbestos is usually found in walls, ceilings and roofing materials, but also in other places in the home. You may also encounter it when doing small DIY jobs at home. Ask Lieven de Key for advice. Check out the asbestos advisor (in Dutch).

Is asbestos dangerous?

Asbestos is only dangerous when dust is released into the air, for example through drilling or sawing. When you are going to do a DIY job or renovation work in a house that dates from before 1994, please think about the kind of materials you are working with. You should always contact Lieven de Key first for advice.

What will Lieven de Key do?

  • If we find asbestos in places where it poses a risk to the occupant, it will be removed.

  • When we carry out maintenance or renovation work, we will always do an asbestos survey.

  • We also have each property checked for asbestos before a new tenant moves in.

Will I be safe in my home after asbestos has been removed?

Yes. Asbestos is always removed by a specialist company that operates according to strict rules. After removing the asbestos, technical staff from a specialist laboratory will check that the property is completely free of asbestos fibres.
